Adopt a Family
Family information will be available by mid-October. If you would like to be notified when the information becomes available online, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
All families who apply for assistance through the Families First Adopt-A-Family program are enrolled in or affiliated with our programs throughout the metro Atlanta community. This includes families who were previously homeless, teen mothers, youth who have aged out of foster care, etc. These families are living at or below the poverty level or face economic challenges on a daily basis.
No. You can choose to adopt a family for just one holiday.
Once you have selected a family and entered your information, you will receive an email with the family details including their needs and wish list.
The clothing sizes for each family member will be included in the email that is sent to you immediately after you make your selection to adopt your family. If you adopt more than one family, the information for each family will be on a spreadsheet attached to that confirmation email.
We recommend using the guideline of $50 per family of 2, $100 for a family of four, $150 for a family of six, and $200 for a family of eight. We ask that you donate a $25 gift card for the family to purchase a turkey. Click here for a list of requested food items.
We only accept non-perishable food items! We cannot accept turkeys or other items that require refrigeration.
We do not have a certain required amount, but suggest you use your best judgment based on the family size. If you would like to adopt a family personally but don’t have much to spend, we recommend you choose one of the smaller families to sponsor and recruit additional family members, church members, or co-workers to join you in adopting a family!
We do not accept donations of used goods for the holiday season.
For Thanksgiving, we ask that you bring the items in a box, laundry basket, or sturdy reusable shopping bag. Laundry baskets and reusable shopping bags are also handy for our families after the holidays. Please avoid using several different grocery bags for one family, if possible.
For the December holidays, we encourage you to wrap your gifts, though it is not required. Please label individual items with the family member’s name. Deliver the gifts in large heavy duty trash bags so we can ensure items for each family stay together. Please make sure the Family ID and Group Name is clearly labeled on all of the large bags.
For most families of four members or less, we recommend that their gifts fit into two (2) large heavy duty garbage bags. If your family has requested a large item (e.g., a bicycle), you may choose to purchase a gift card in the amount of the item instead of the item itself. We will gratefully accept larger deliveries, but prefer that most are of a more manageable size due to space constraints at our delivery location.
You are more than welcome to send us gift cards! We have new families entering our programs every day who will have missed the deadline to apply for assistance this holiday season. If you choose to send in gift cards for our general use, you can mail them to Families First, ATTN: VOLUNTEER. Please mail gift cards for Thanksgiving no later than November 5, and for the December Holidays no later than December 5.
Absolutely! You can also contact us to find out what our current needs are – coats, linens, towels, etc. If you are interested in Families First being the beneficiary of your organization’s toy or gift drive, please email email@example.com, and we will send you the details on deadlines and delivery instructions.
Families First is happy to acknowledge your Adopt-A-Family donation for tax purposes. We will provide an in-kind donation form for you to complete. Upon receipt of the completed and signed in-kind donation form, Families First will email you an acknowledgement letter after the holidays which can be submitted to your tax preparer.
We have ongoing needs throughout the year for all of our clients, and we are requesting hygiene items, linens and towels, baby goods, coats, and Marta cards (transportation to school/work for our clients).
We also have a real need for gift cards to purchase gifts for those clients and their families who enter one of our programs between now and the holidays.
Volunteers are also needed to help with donation drop-off days, sorting and wrapping of gifts at our home office, and assisting with staff pick-up days. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to volunteer your time as an Elf Helper behind the scenes!

There is no one-size-fits-all cost for adoptions. The total cost of adoption depends on several factors and varies for each family. Some factors include: the type of adoption, the agency you work with, the state in which you live, attorney fees, annual income and any necessary travel expenses.
Range of adoption costs
- Foster care adoptions: $0 – $2,500
- Licensed private agency adoptions: $5,000 – $40,000+
- Independent adoptions: $8,000 – $40,000+
- Intercountry adoptions: $7,000 – $30,000
On average, the adoption process takes 1-2 years. But it depends on a number of variables, including whether pre-adoption classes are required, how long it takes to complete your homestudy, and how long it takes to find the right child for your family.
The adoption process begins with an inquiry. At Families First we receive several calls, emails which lead to conversations that take place between an interested family and our staff. Upon that inquiry, interested parties may be asked to participate in an adoption orientation or IMPACT Training class. There is also necessary paperwork that will need to be completed before the homestudy can begin.
A homestudy is an in-depth assessment which involves in-person interviews, observations, reference checks, background checks and home visits. Homestudies are not standardized; they follow state regulations and may vary from state to state. The average homestudy, including verification submissions can take anywhere from three to six months to complete.
Yes! Many people think you have to be married in order to adopt and that isn’t the case. You can be single. You can be married. You can be in a committed relationship. As long as you meet the requirements to apply for adoption, Families First is happy to help you along your adoption journey.
Yes! At Families First we strive to provide all members of our community with the option to become parents if they want to. We are proud to offer our services and support to members of the LGBTQ community interested in adoption.
We do not have a mandatory volunteer orientation; however, a short day-of training may be provided for certain opportunities.
There is no time requirement for volunteering with Families First. We appreciate any time you can give to help us further our mission and serve our community.
Yes! Children and youth can join their parents for many of our volunteer opportunities. Children and youth must be accompanied by a supervising adult, and a parent or legal guardian must sign a volunteer waiver for any child/youth under the age of 18 who wishes to participate. We encourage our passionate youth leaders to get their community involved and help another child in need by hosting a fundraiser or donation drive.
Volunteer opportunities are generally at our main office at 80 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. in the Historic Westside of Atlanta.
We occasionally have opportunities for you to complete court-ordered service hours. We only accept community service volunteers with misdemeanor charges that do not include offenses related to children, pets, or theft. Please contact email@example.com for current community service options.
